    How To Indent In Microsoft Word and Google Docs – TeachThought

    Step‑by‑step instructions for first‑line and hanging indents, with tips for using the ruler — mobile‑friendly and easy to follow.

    Microsoft Word (Windows/Mac)

    Fastest way

    1. Place the cursor at the start of the line.
    2. Press Tab once to indent about 0.5″.
    3. Press Backspace at the start to remove the indent.

    Button method

    1. Go to Home > Increase Indent.
    2. Use Decrease Indent to move it back.

    Set a first‑line or hanging indent

    1. Select your paragraph(s).
    2. Open the Paragraph dialog (Home > small launcher).
    3. Under Indentation > Special, choose First line or Hanging and set the amount (e.g., 0.5″).
    4. Click OK.

    Precise control with the Ruler: Go to View > Ruler. Drag the top triangle (first‑line), bottom triangle (left indent), or square (whole paragraph).

    Fastest way

    1. Place the cursor at the start of the line.
    2. Press Tab to indent the first line.
    3. Press Backspace to remove.

    Set a first‑line or hanging indent

    1. Select your text.
    2. Go to Format > Align & indent > Indentation options.
    3. Choose First line or Hanging and set the size.
    4. Click Apply.

    Use the Ruler: View > Show ruler, then drag the markers just like in Word.

    Tip: Save time by editing the default paragraph style (Normal text) so every new paragraph follows the same indent settings.
